Office / Study
Depending on your style of home and personal requirements, you may decide that carpets are not the most suitable type of flooring for your home. If you have converted one of your bedrooms into an office or study area, there are a plethora of styles to choose from which deliver on comfort, have a professional look and remain resistant to wear and tear, including:
Top Tip: For attic bedrooms, a heavy duty underlay is key for thermal and sound insulation, as well as providing a barrier against moisture. The hardwearing qualities of hardwood, laminate and vinyl make them the perfect flooring solutions for the attic, whilst a cosy carpet delivers on comfort.
Kitchens
Functionality is key when it comes to choosing new flooring for your kitchen to ensure it can withstand spills, stains and moisture, as well as heavy foot traffic. As such, you must avoid solid wood in your kitchen as the high humidity and moisture levels can cause the wood to warp and change size.
Whilst there are types of carpets available which are designed to resist stains in a busy kitchen, materials such as vinyl or LVTs tend to be the most practical options.
Benefits Of Vinyl And LVT Designer Floors Include:
Minimal maintenance as they can be wiped clean
Beautiful, polished designs guaranteed to impress visitors
Hard wearing and robust
Slip resistant
Cost-effective
Available in a wide range of patterns and styles, including marble, stone and wood effects
Top Tip: Whilst LVT designer floors are slightly more expensive, when looked after correctly they can last for 25-30 years, proving them to be a worthy investment.
Another Popular Type Of Flooring For The Kitchen Is Lino:
Low initial purchase prices and installation costs
Available in a range colours, patterns, styles and effects
Expected lifespan of over 40 years
Very water resistant
Easy to clean
Virtually maintenance-free
Can withstand high foot traffic
Living Room / Dining Room
Typically the social hub of the household, the living room requires a type of flooring which can withstand heavy foot traffic. If carpet is your preferred choice, you will need to choose a practical, hard wearing design which can withstand regular use, particularly if you have a busy household.
Carpets made from polypropylene – such as Saxony carpets – are a popular option as they are stain resistant and easy to clean, making them perfectly suited for houses with young children or pets.
Alternatively, if you would rather have a hard floor in your living room, the following types make for excellent choices:
Laminate
Low maintenance
Easy to keep clean
Relatively scratch proof
Top tip: Don’t be tempted by cheap deals – it’s worth investing slightly more money into a hard-wearing laminate floor for longevity.
Hardwood
Long life expectancy
Timeless look
Easy to clean
Engineered Wood
Robust
Less likely to warp than hardwood
Cost-effective
LVT’s
Custom-made
Low maintenance
Long lasting (can remain in pristine condition for as long as 25 to 30 years if looked after correctly)
Top tip: If you plan on having underfloor heating in your living room, you cannot have a solid wood floor – the most suitable types of flooring are laminate and LVT.

Hallway

This style not only promises to bring the ‘wow’ factor to both modern and traditional properties, it’s highly durable design will last for decades. Hardwood floors are specially designed to be lived on, meaning they can withstand the high foot traffic and accidental spillages of everyday life.
Vinyl
The low-maintenance qualities of vinyl flooring make it another popular choice for the hallway. It can be simply wiped clean which is particularly useful in this high traffic area of the home which will experience muddy shoes! Vinyl flooring is available in a wide range of colours and patterns, including wood, marble and stone effects.
Carpet
If you would prefer to have carpet fitted in your hallway, you should opt for a durable design which can withstand a great deal of wear and tear. As such, a wool mix carpet – such as Axminster and Wilton – is ideally suited.
Stairs & Landing
Carpet
As one of the main areas of the home which will experience heavy foot traffic, your stairs will require a better quality carpet to withstand regular use. Similar to the hallway, a wool mix carpet, such as Axminster and Wilton, is a recommended solution as its colours won’t fade even after years of use, and it is naturally dirt resistant.
Hardwood & Laminate
Hardwood and laminate are also popular options, as although they can be rather slippery, their low maintenance, easy to clean qualities make them a popular choice in many households.
Stair Runner
Alternatively, you could combine the two by having a stair runner fitted in your home. Not only will this protect your hardwood floors from scratches and scuffs, it will also inject colour and style into your home.
Bathroom
Due to the high humidity levels in the bathroom, solid wood is the least suitable flooring. It is prone to changing shape depending on the atmosphere, expanding when drawing in moisture and shrinking when the air is dry.

The best flooring options for the bathroom are:
